VICTORIA MEMORIAL CLUB (NOW SADUL CLUB) IN ITS PRISTINE GLORY IN 1902

TO COMMEMORATE THE MEMORY OF QUEEN VICTORIA, THE EMPRESS OF INDIA, WHO DIED IN 1901 A.D. MAHARAJA SIR GANGA SINGH JI BHADUR OF BIKANER ESTABLISHED A CLUB IN BIKANER IN 1902 AD. TO PROVIDE SPORTING ENTERTAINMENT OF THE GENTRY OF BIKANER AND NAMED IT VICTORIA MEMORIAL CLUB. THE ARCHITECT OF THE CLUB WAS COLONEL SIR SWINTON JOCOB, WHO ALSO BUILT THE LALLGARH PALACE. THE FUNDS OF THE CLUB WERE RAISED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTIONS AND 500 ACRES OF LAND WAS PROVIDED BY THE STATE. THE CLUB PROVIDED TWO POLO GROUNDS ON EAST AND WEST OF CLUB BUILDING IN ADDITION THERE WERE TWO TENNIS COURTS, TWO RACKET SQUASH COURTS, SKATING RINK AND A SWIMMING POOL. THERE WAS ALSO A COMBINED CRICKET AND FOOTBALL GROUND WITH A BEAUTIFUL PAVILION. THE CLUB WAS FORMALLY OPENED BY LORD CURZON, THE VICEROY OF INDIA, ON 24 NOV 1902 A.D.

The duke of Connaught, The second son of Queen Victoria and the great duke of Hesse, Brother of King Kaiser of Germany and grandson of Queen Victoria, Attended the function of prize distribution of Walter Nobles High School along with Maharajan Ganga Singh Ji on 17 Feb. 1903 A.D. the following military review parades were at Victoriya Memorial Club Ground in honour of visiting dignitaries.

IN EARLY YEARS OF CLUB POLO WAS VERY POPULAR AND MAHARAJAH GANGA SINGH JI WAS A VERY GOOD PLAYER WITH 8 HANDICAP. THE CLUB WAS RE-DESIGNATED AS SADUL CLUB IN 1947.
